What is Google Podcasts?

The official Android app Google Podcasts can be used to discover and listen to podcasts. It is similar in many ways to Apple Podcasts. Users can also explore recommendations and manage their listening activity. If you need to stop listening, the app can save your place in an episode.

This is Why It's So Important

Your show will be available to millions of Android users. Submitting your show to Google Podcasts can also open up other avenues for exposure, such as:

  • Google Search is available on desktop and mobile browsers. You can also play episodes in your browser.
  • Google Search App for Android Devices
  • Google Podcasts app available for mobile devices
  • Google Home
  • Google Assistant Content Action
  • Android Auto for your car

We now know why it is so important to submit your show on Google Podcasts. Let's look at how to do that!

How to get your podcast on Google Home

Is your podcast automatically added to Google Home or Google Assistant for voice searches once it is approved to be listed on Google Podcasts? Our research shows that yes, with some caveats.

Here's the response from Google:

Google Nest and Google Home speakers, and displays allow you to listen to your favorite podcasts from any place in your home using your voice. This feature is only available in English.

But here's the catch. The catch? You will need to ask Google Home (aka Google Assistant), to play the podcast name and not an episode number.

You can say, "Hey Google! Play podcast!" Also, Google Home devices allow you to say phrases such as "Next episode," or "Previous," or "Listen to the most recent episode of."

You can't use phrases like "Hey Google play number 241" or "Hey Google play my Spotify podcast."

According Google, there are two reasons for this. The first is that podcasts currently not listed in the Google Home app aren't technically available. We'll keep you posted if this changes.

Second, podcasts from partner podcasts, such as Spotify, TuneIn and Google Podcasts, are not currently supported. You can ask Google Home/Assistant to play a particular podcast.
